Charlene Codner
Encaustic Artist
Charlene is a visual artist whose work centers on the luminous, tactile medium of encaustic painting—where pigment is suspended in heated wax and applied in molten layers. The medium’s depth, texture, and ability to capture light immediately drew her in, becoming central to her practice.
With many years of experience as a graphic designer, Charlene brings a strong sense of composition, color, and structure to her work, which she now combines with intuition and experimentation. Her process often incorporates found and discarded materials—packaging, cardboard, wallpaper, tissue paper, dryer sheets, magazine clippings, and other unexpected fragments—embedded in layers of wax to create richly textured surfaces that carry traces of everyday life.
The inherent unpredictability of encaustic allows her to move beyond precision into storytelling, while the rhythms and textures of the natural landscape surrounding her studio near Owen Sound inform the layered, luminous character of her work.
